The Significance of Base Oil

Base oil is the fundamental component in all lubricants, making it a pivotal element in various industries. In a typical lubricant composition, it constitutes approximately 90% of the total, with the remaining 10% comprising additives. The quality and performance of base oils are classified by the American Petroleum Institute (API) based on three key attributes:

Level of Saturation

Saturated molecules naturally occur in base oil, but the refining process enhances their concentration. The strength of the molecular bond in base oil is directly proportional to the amount of saturation. Higher saturation results in increased viscosity, resistance to breakdown, and improved oxidation resistance.

Level of Sulfur

Crude oil contains sulfur as an inherent inorganic element. While sulfur can act as an effective antioxidant, it can also negatively impact engine oil performance and harm exhaust treatment devices. Lower sulfur levels lead to reduced corrosion and oxidation risks.

Viscosity Percentage

The Viscosity Index measures how viscosity changes with temperature fluctuations. Viscosity is assessed at both 40°C and 100°C to determine a substance’s ability to withstand temperature variations. Generally, as temperatures decrease, oil viscosity increases, and vice versa.

Base Oil Groups

Base oils are categorized into five groups, each with specific specifications and applications:

Group I(1) Base Oil

Group I oils have a viscosity percentage ranging from 80 to 120 and contain less than 90% saturation. They also include more than 0.03% sulfur. These oils operate within a temperature range of 32 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit and are relatively easy to refine, making them the most cost-effective option.

Group II(2) Base Oil

Group II oils have a viscosity percentage of 80 to 120 and a saturated content of 90% or higher, with less than 0.03% sulfur. They are produced through a more complex hydrocracking process, resulting in enhanced antioxidant activity. Although slightly more expensive than Group I oils, they offer improved performance.

Group III(3) Base Oil

Group III oils boast a viscosity percentage exceeding 120, over 90% saturation, and less than 0.03% sulfur. These highly refined oils undergo rigorous hydrocracking processes, aiming for the purest base oil possible. Despite being derived from crude oil, they are often referred to as synthetic hydrocarbons.

Group IV(4) Base Oil

Group IV oils, known as Polyalphaolefins (PAOs), are synthetic oils created through manufacturing processes. They exhibit excellent temperature resistance, making them suitable for extreme temperature applications.

Group V(5) Base Oil

Group V encompasses a broad category of base oils, including silicone, phosphate ester, PAG, polyolester, bio lubes, and more. These oils are often blended with other base stocks to enhance specific properties, such as temperature resistance and detergency.

Understanding Base Oil Prices

The pricing of base oil varies based on product type and market demand. We employ a supply and demand system to ensure stability in pricing, allowing us to align our production with market needs. Stable pricing is essential for industries reliant on base oils, as they serve as the foundation for various industrial oils.

Base Oil Price Index

The base oil price index plays a pivotal role in the growth and prosperity of numerous industries, as industrial oils are derived from base oil. This index serves as a vital benchmark in countries where industry development takes center stage.

Virgin and Recycled Base Oil Supplier

At ProPetro, we offer both virgin and recycled base oils to cater to diverse customer needs.

Virgin Base Oil

Our range includes Base Oil SN 150, SN 500, SN 500 Group 2, SN 150 Group 3, and Bright stock Base Oil BS 150 and BS 500. We serve Asian countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and African countries like South Africa, West Africa, East Africa, including Central Africa, and countries like Kenya, Nigeria, Algeria, Chad, Mali, Ghana, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Togo, Durban, Dares Salaam, Guinea, Mauritania, and Angola.

We source our virgin base oils from oil-rich OPEC countries, ensuring adherence to rigorous quality standards through laboratory testing and certification.

Recycled Base Oil

Used oil recycling is a meticulous process involving distillation, acidic (sulfuric acid) and non-acidic (alkaline – bentonite or dye) methods, centrifugation, and hydrogenation. Recyclers acquire used oils, remove contaminants such as water, diesel, and metal shavings, and refine the oil through a series of steps, including sedimentation, acid and alkaline reactions, rinsing, distillation, decolorizing, filtering, hydrogenation, and blending.

Recycled base oil SN 150 offers several advantages, including color stability, environmental friendliness, cost-effectiveness, quick processing, suitable flash point, and high viscosity.
