Ethylbenzene

Ethylbenzene is an aromatic hydrocarbon composed of a benzene ring
linked to an ethyl group. Ethylbenzene is a constituent of petroleum and coal tar and is used as either a petroleum additive or a chemical
intermediate in the production of polystyrene. High level exposure to
airborne ethylbenzene is associated with eye and throat irritation.

Ethylbenzene is a colorless liquid with a sweet, aromatic odor. It is also
known as EB and phenylethane. It is an important industrial chemical
used primarily as a precursor to the production of styrene, which is
used to make a variety of plastics, synthetic rubber, and resins.

Ethylbenzene is produced in large quantities worldwide, with most
production occurring in Asia, Europe, and North America. It can be
synthesized by the alkylation of benzene with ethylene in the presence
of a catalyst.

In addition to its use in the production of styrene, ethylbenzene is also
used as a solvent, a gasoline additive, and a component of asphalt and
naphtha. However, it is important to handle ethylbenzene with care, as
it is flammable and can be harmful if inhaled or ingested.
